Overview

Every consequential decision is made inside an environment the organization does not control. This program teaches a repeatable discipline for reading that environment, judging what it means, and giving a decision-maker something to act on. Nineteen skills in five modules follow five pillars: Frame, Scan, Connect, Judge, and Deliver. You bring a live decision from your own organization, and by the end you hold a completed estimate on it, not notes about a method. It is not a forecasting course and it does not teach research collection.

Pillars

  • Frame
  • Scan
  • Connect
  • Judge
  • Deliver

What you will be able to do

  • Frame an assigned analytic task as a bounded decision, scope it, and produce a rated assumption ledger.
  • Conduct a complete eight-domain BEARINGS Scan, grade all sources, card all findings, and produce a ranked Blank Map.
  • Build a cited Link Grid from a card set, run three-order consequence chains, score available leverage points, and classify changes as drift or jolt.
  • Test evidence against competing explanations, run a structured bias sweep, assign calibrated confidence, and convert findings into so-what lines.
  • Produce a one-page estimate, build a watchboard, deliver a ninety-second verbal read, and set a refresh rhythm.

Terminal learning objectives

One per module, stated as action, condition, and standard. The standard is what a learner must demonstrate; it is observable and checkable.

  1. M1

    Framing the Question

    Action
Frame an assigned analytic task as a bounded decision, scope it, and produce a rated assumption ledger.
    Condition
Given facilitated instruction, the Participant Guide, the case study packet, and a self-selected live analytic task from the participant's own work.
    Standard
The participant produces a completed Four Corners worksheet whose decision statement contains a verb and at least two named options, a named decider, a deadline with a stated anchoring event, and at least two deal-breakers; a Scope Box with all four edges and at least one reasoned exclusion; and an Assumption Ledger of at least eight entries in which every load-bearing row carries a confidence basis, a test with a named owner, and a trigger.
  2. M2

    Scanning the Environment

    Action
Conduct a complete eight-domain BEARINGS Scan, grade all sources, card all findings, and produce a ranked Blank Map.
    Condition
Given facilitated instruction, the Participant Guide, scan sheets, a supplied mixed source set, and the participant's own framed task from Lesson 1.
    Standard
The participant produces scan entries for all eight domains including explicit unknowns, a coverage judgment for every domain, at least ten Finding Cards in which no observation field contains inference and every card carries a paired source grade and both dates, and a Blank Map in which every gap is phrased as an answerable question and the top three carry named owners and dates.
  3. M3

    Connecting the Domains

    Action
Build a cited Link Grid from a card set, run three-order consequence chains, score available leverage points, and classify changes as drift or jolt.
    Condition
Given facilitated instruction, the Participant Guide, the participant's own card set from Lesson 2, and the case study card set.
    Standard
The participant produces a Link Grid in which every populated cell cites a card ID and carries direction and strength, with row and column totals computed and at least one coupled pair named; a three-order Then-What Chain whose change statement carries direction and magnitude and whose second order names actors and responses; a Leverage Read selecting exactly two points with reach cited to the grid; and a Drift and Jolt classification in which drift entries carry rate and threshold and jolt entries carry trigger and precursors.
  4. M4

    Judging the Picture

    Action
Test evidence against competing explanations, run a structured bias sweep, assign calibrated confidence, and convert findings into so-what lines.
    Condition
Given facilitated instruction, the Participant Guide, the participant's own card set and link grid, and the case study evidence set.
    Standard
The participant produces a Rival Reads matrix with at least three non-straw-man explanations, non-diagnostic evidence struck, and a named discriminator routed to the Blank Map; a completed six-trap sweep in which every hit carries a recorded correction; confidence bands with stated bases in which findings and projections are banded separately; and so-what lines following the fixed pattern with at least one finding explicitly dropped.
  5. M5

    Delivering the Decision

    Action
Produce a one-page estimate, build a watchboard, deliver a ninety-second verbal read, and set a refresh rhythm.
    Condition
Given facilitated instruction, the Participant Guide, all prior module outputs for the participant's live task, and a timed delivery partner.
    Standard
The participant produces a one-page estimate whose recommendation appears in the first three sentences, whose so-whats each carry a band, and whose gaps block names owners and dates; a Watchboard of six to ten observable indicators each with threshold, named owner, and pre-agreed action; a verbal read delivered in ninety seconds or less containing all five blocks in order; and a Re-Scan Rhythm assigning an interval to all eight domains.
